Windows 10 End of Life: What You Need to Know

As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for this operating system, potentially leaving millions of devices vulnerable.

This announcement marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s technology roadmap, urging users to transition to Windows 11 or other alternatives.

Without official support, Windows 10 systems will no longer receive essential security updates or patches, increasing risks of cyberattacks and compatibility issues.

Are you prepared for this major transition, or will your system become a liability? Here's what you need to know.

Why the End of Windows 10 Support Matters

As of November 2024, Windows 10 holds approximately 61.82% of the global desktop Windows market share, while Windows 11 accounts for about 34.94%. StatCounter.

One would assume the numerical change from 10 to 11 would be an insignificant one but that assumption would be incorrect. Windows 11 introduces advanced security measures that surpass those of Windows 10. These enhancements focus on hardware-based security, advanced encryption, and zero-trust principles to protect against modern threats. Here are the key security improvements:

Hardware-Based Security

  • Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0:
    • Windows 11 mandates the use of TPM 2.0, a hardware-based security chip integrated into modern processors or added separately to motherboards.
    • TPM provides secure storage for encryption keys, login credentials, and other sensitive data.
    • It supports BitLocker, which encrypts drives to protect against unauthorized access.
  • Impact: Without TPM 2.0, systems cannot meet the minimum security standards set by Windows 11.
  • Secure Boot:
    • Ensures that the operating system only loads trusted software during the startup process.
    • Prevents rootkits and other low-level attacks that exploit the boot sequence.

Virtualization-Based Security (VBS)

  • Isolates critical system components from the rest of the OS using virtualization technology.
  • Protects sensitive information such as login credentials by storing them in a secure, virtualized environment.
  • Works in tandem with Hypervisor Code Integrity (HVCI) to prevent unsigned drivers and malicious code from running.

Enhanced Identity Protection

  • Windows Hello for Business:
    • Provides passwordless authentication using biometrics (face or fingerprint recognition) or PINs.
    • Eliminates reliance on passwords, reducing the risk of phishing attacks.
  • Credential Guard:
    • Safeguards login credentials using hardware-level isolation, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Built-In Security Defaults

  • Windows 11 comes pre-configured with stronger default security settings to reduce the attack surface.
  • Features such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen are enabled out of the box.

Why Some PCs Are Not Compatible with Windows 11

Microsoft introduced stricter hardware requirements for Windows 11 to ensure it can leverage these advanced security features and perform optimally. Here’s why some PCs, particularly those with older processors, may not meet the requirements:

1. Processor Compatibility

  • Modern Processor Requirements:
    • Windows 11 supports only Intel 8th generation (or newer) and AMD Ryzen 2000 series (or newer) processors.
    • These processors include built-in support for technologies like TPM 2.0 and VBS.
  • Lack of Support in Older CPUs:
    • Older processors lack hardware-level support for these critical features.
    • They may not efficiently handle the increased workload of virtualization and advanced encryption, leading to performance issues.

2. Performance and Power Efficiency

  • Windows 11 is optimized for the latest processors with improved speed, power management, and efficiency.
  • Older CPUs may struggle with the demands of Windows 11, resulting in slower performance and higher power consumption.

3. Graphics and DirectX 12 Support

  • Windows 11 requires GPUs capable of supporting DirectX 12 for better graphics and smoother user experience.
  • PCs with outdated GPUs may not meet this standard, rendering them incompatible.

4. UEFI Firmware and Secure Boot

  • Windows 11 requires UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capabilities.
  • Legacy BIOS systems cannot provide the required security assurances, making older hardware incompatible.

The numbers don't lie

According to a Windows 11 Survey Report (Techaisle LLC, September 2024) New Windows 11 PCs are more secure, with a reported 62% drop in security incidents and 3x reported reduction in firmware attacks.

Next Steps & Preparation

With the Windows 10 end-of-support date (October 14, 2025) rapidly approaching, it’s essential to take proactive steps to ensure your systems remain secure, compliant, and fully operational. Here’s how to prepare for the transition effectively:

Windows 10 Functionality Post-2025

While Windows 10 will continue to operate normally after October 2025, please note:

  • No Support: Microsoft will cease maintaining, supporting, or updating the Windows 10 operating system.
  • Security Risks: Systems running Windows 10 will no longer receive critical security patches, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.
  • Compliance Concerns: Operating an unsupported OS may lead to non-compliance with industry regulations, putting your business at legal and financial risk.

Upgrade or Replace

  • Upgrading PCs: Some devices may be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11, depending on hardware compatibility.
  • Replacing Older Systems: Devices that do not meet Windows 11 requirements will need to be replaced with newer hardware to ensure optimal performance and security.
